This cleverly designed Shell Holder Set can help a loader achieve exactly the amount of shoulder setback they wish when full length sizing cartridge cases. The set up is simple and can actually be done without measuring or calculation. A standard SAAMI Spec shell holder has a depth of 0.125″ measured from the top portion that contacts the press ram to the bottom of the opening that supports the case head. The Competition Shell Holder Set includes 5 non standard shell holders, each cut to a deeper depth than the standard 0.125″ shell holder. These non standard shell holders are clearly marked with the extra depth of cut, +.002, +.004, +.006, +,008, and +.010.
In practise, when you set up your full length sizing die, you simply adjust it to bottom out and lightly cam over the shell holder. Start with +.010 and size a fired case. Check the case in the firearm it is to be used in and if you are happy with the way the bolt closes, then you are done. If you run into difficulty, go down one size at a time until you have the correct shell holder. This simple method can be used to size a case perfectly to match a chamber so that there is less wear on the brass and in theory should contribute to greater accuracy.
This is also a great solution for people shooting different rifles with different chambers of the same calibre. Just simply record the correct shell holder for each rifle and you can either size all of your brass to the lowest size necessary and use it in all your rifles, or keep separate batches for each rifle.
These sets are available in Redding Size #1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, 18 & 12. This particular Redding Competition Shell Holder Set #1 is correct for the 308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, and many other popular cartridges.
