Lyman Neck Expanding Die 22 Calibre Type M

The Lyman Neck Expanding Die (M Die) is used to expand a case neck to slightly under the full bullet diameter.  The M Die is very simple.  It consists of a die body, locking ring and a mandrill with two steps.  The small step on the 30 Calibre measures 0.3065 inches in diameter, and is used to set neck tension, and in theory straighten case necks.  The larger step is used to create a flare in the case mouth to ease seating soft lead bullets.

You could set up a loading process where first you remove the old primer with Lee Universal Decapping Die or similar tool, tumble, then resize using an ordinary full length sizing die with the expander removed, then set your neck tension using the M Die.  There are several advantages to loading cases this way as variations in case neck thickness will not effect neck tension as it is set with the mandrill, and not a bushing.  Removing the expander ball from the full length sizing process will probably work the case necks less and lead to longer brass life.
