The Lee Collet die works by squeezing the case neck around a mandrill as pressure is applied in a loading press. This process does not require any lubrication, only a clean case. The collet die also removes the old primer while sizing the case neck.
In reality, loading using this method is very fast and the primary benefit is reduced run-out in the case neck. It is possible to create very accurate ammunition using inexpensive Lee Collet dies. For those of you that neck size as part of your loading process, you should test this die. The mandrill ‘floats’ slightly in the die so every component involved in the neck sizing operation tends to self centre around the other components which creates amazingly straight case mouths.
If you wish to increase neck tension you can ‘polish’ a small amount of metal off the mandrill using a drill or lathe and fine emery cloth.
Recommended for use in strong single stage loading presses. This die is for the 308 Winchester Cartridge.
There is an interesting video that demonstrates the use of the Lee Collet Die and a comparison with another neck sizing die that is worth watching.
