JB Bore Paste is a non embedding bore cleaning compound. It has been around since the early 1960’s when it was invented by Jim Brobst for the Bench Rest discipline to remove heavy copper and powder fouling. Jim refined the compound over the next 10 years until he felt it was perfected.
J-B is mildly abrasive and for this reason it is used sparingly. A small amount will last the average shooter many years. In a perfect world, you would use this product in conjunction with a borescope and check your progress as you work. Some shooters use this product in conjunction with Kroil and claim good results. Most shooters lightly apply gun oil to a loose fitting patch then add a small film of JB after the patch is wrapped around a jag. The patch is then run through the barrel from the breach end (using a bore guide) using strokes of ever increasing length working towards full length strokes without letting the patch exit through the muzzle. Rough or tight spots in the barrel will be felt as resistance. These spots will require extra strokes to remove.
Some shooters are running a nylon brush lightly coated with JB through their barrels. We do not recommend this process.
As J-B Bore Paste is a mild abrasive, it is important to minimize wear at the muzzle of the barrel. After a few passes, remove the excess compound from the bore with a solvent soaked patch, followed by dry patches.
Although designed to maintain accuracy in precision firearms, the product has applications in restoration work as well. With careful use I have restored the ‘shine’ to the bores of many valuable pre-WWI firearms.
